Because of the room change and various technical challenges I never had time to show you the demos i wanted to which really help understand these settings.<\/p>\n<p>I tried battling with the union site but it doesn&#8217;t like me, so im posting here for now and will transfer it later.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"pixcode  pixcode--separator  separator separator--dotted\"\/>\n<h1>What is Exposure ?<\/h1>\n<p>Essentially exposure is the image we create whilst letting light fall onto the cameras sensor. It is controlled by 3 separate camera function each of which we discuss below.<\/p>\n<p>The word &#8220;exposure&#8221; is quite literally referring to how we are &#8220;exposing&#8221; the sensor to the light.<\/p>\n<p>It is a balance of these three functions&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>Shutter Speed + Aperture + ISO<\/h3>\n<p>&#8230; which will allow you to achieve the creative effect you desire, whilst not letting in too much light (Overexpose) or too little (Underexpose).<\/p>\n<hr class=\"pixcode  pixcode--separator  separator separator--dotted\"\/>\n<h1>Shutter Speed<\/h1>\n<p>You can imagine the shutter like a set of curtains on a window. It is usually closed, so no light is allowed in. We can quickly open these curtains for a set duration to let some light fall onto the sensor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">longer <\/span>the curtains are open, the more light is allowed to collect onto our sensor and the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">brighter <\/span>the image gets.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/islou.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/shutter_speed.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/islou.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/shutter_speed.png\" alt=\"shutter_speed\" width=\"600\" height=\"246\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>On my camera ?<\/h2>\n<p>All SLR cameras and now, many point and shoot cameras allow you to control shutter (now even some phones have this control!).<\/p>\n<p>There are generally two modes in which you can set the shutter speed, these are\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Manual Mode&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Shutter Priority Mode&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3208\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3208\" style=\"width: 419px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/islou.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Picture5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3208\" title=\"Shutter Priority Dials\" src=\"http:\/\/islou.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Picture5.png\" alt=\"Picture5\" width=\"419\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/louisc.co.uk\/photo2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Picture5.png 419w, https:\/\/louisc.co.uk\/photo2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Picture5-288x135.png 288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 419px) 100vw, 419px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3208\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Canon and Nikon &#8220;Shutter Priority&#8221; Mode symbol on Dials<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Shutter Priority Mode<\/strong> will allow you to set a shutter speed, and the camera will automatically adjust aperture values (explained below) to keep the exposure correct.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Manual Mode<\/strong>\u00a0gives you full control over both shutter speed and aperture. As will become clear, to get exposure correct, you must balance these two options.<\/p>\n<h2>Creative (side) Effects<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A\u00a0<strong>longer\u00a0<\/strong>shutter speed will allow for motion blur. This means anything moving in your scene will begin to become blurry. Use this to emphasize or create motion in your scene!<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<strong>longer<\/strong>\u00a0shutter speed also means that any\u00a0<strong>movement<\/strong>\u00a0in the camera\u00a0<strong>whilst the shutter is open will be recorded leading to a blurry image.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure style=\"width: 528px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/islou.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/LCH_6438-copy.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Pace of City Life - Markela DLR Motion Blur\" src=\"http:\/\/islou.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/LCH_6438-copy.png\" alt=\"Pace of City Life - Markela DLR Motion Blur\" width=\"528\" height=\"351\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">In this shot I used a slow shutter speed to allow the moving DLR train to blur out. This was shot on a photosoc trip to london a few years back!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr class=\"pixcode  pixcode--separator  separator separator--dotted\"\/>\n<h1>Aperture<\/h1>\n<p>The aperture is a ring which can be opened or closed to allow or restrict light and its path into the camera.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">wide<\/span> aperture is denoted by a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">smaller number<\/span>\u00a0which lets in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">more light<\/span> while a <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">tight<\/span> aperture is denoted by <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">larger numbers <span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">and<\/span> lets in less light<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Below are a series of images shot at various apertures. This is used to describe how much ahead and behind of your focus point is still acceptably sharp or &#8220;in focus&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>So if we say a &#8220;shallow depth of field&#8221; we mean that there is very little ahead or behind our focus point (or subject) which is in focus. This is usually seen in images as a nice blurry background which people usually associate with &#8220;professional&#8221; photos.<\/p>\n<p>A <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Larger or\u00a0Wider<\/strong> <\/span>aperture will <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">reduce your depth of field<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>whilst a <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Smaller aperture <\/strong><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">will <\/span><strong> increase your depth of field <\/strong><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">bringing more into focus<\/span><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\"><strong>.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here is an example of a shot taken in London of a friend with a <strong>Wide Aperture (f.1.8),\u00a0<\/strong>take a look at the background and how small points of light become big soft circles. The wide aperture also allows me to draw in lots of light in this otherwise fairly dark scene.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 528px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/islou.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/LCH_6508-copy.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/islou.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/LCH_6508-copy.png\" alt=\"LCH_6508-copy\" width=\"528\" height=\"350\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A shot with a wide aperture of my friend Aron in london. The wide aperture leads to a nice out of focus background and gives me the ability to collect lots of light into my camera sensor.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr class=\"pixcode  pixcode--separator  separator separator--dotted\"\/>\n<h1>ISO<\/h1>\n<p>Photographs used to be recorded onto film, which was essentially a chemically coated light sensitive strip. The sensitivity of this strip was determined by the film manufacturers and measured in units called ISO (or ASA) which was just an international standardisation. The entire roll of film would be \u00a0the same sensitivity so once loaded into the camera this couldn&#8217;t be changed.<\/p>\n<p>With digital cameras this light sensitive film has been replaced with a light detecting block usually referred to as the &#8220;sensor&#8221;. Unlike the film days we can change the sensitivity of the block as we wish.<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Higher the ISO<\/strong><\/span> the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>More Light\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>is captured, BUT this also leads to a\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">More Noisy Image<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3215\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3215\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/islou.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DSC3015-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3215 \" src=\"http:\/\/islou.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DSC3015-copy.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC3015-copy\" width=\"594\" height=\"458\" srcset=\"https:\/\/louisc.co.uk\/photo2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DSC3015-copy.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/louisc.co.uk\/photo2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DSC3015-copy-288x222.jpg 288w, https:\/\/louisc.co.uk\/photo2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DSC3015-copy-960x740.jpg 960w, https:\/\/louisc.co.uk\/photo2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DSC3015-copy-1024x789.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/louisc.co.uk\/photo2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DSC3015-copy-480x370.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3215\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here is a shot from a christening. This was in a very dimly lit part of the church and the camera was pushed to ISO 1600. Below the image is a 100% zoomed crop.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the example image above shot at ISO 1600 the noise becomes evident, in A you can see random colour squares appearing out of place. In B you can see how an otherwise smooth gradient looks blocky and dirty rather than clean. This is off a modern and high quality camera. Its unlikely an entry level camera will be this clean at ISO 1600.<\/p>\n<p>It is therefore always advisable to keep ISO as low as you can, but make sure you don&#8217;t compromise on the other settings either! Never allow yourself to miss a shot because you did not want to push the ISO up.
